What is Albendazole?
Albendazole (lat. Albendazole) – a drug used against worms. It is used for giardiasis, trichocephalosis, filariasis, ascariasis and other diseases that occur with the defeat of parasites. Albendazole was developed in 1975 and is on the World Health Organization’s main drug list. The medicine is intended for ingestion.
Albendazole causes degenerative changes in the intestinal cells of the worm. When tubulin polymerization is suppressed, cellular cytoplasmic microtubules of the parasite’s intestinal tract are destroyed. The action of the agent is based on changes in biochemical processes: there is a slowdown in glucose utilization and inhibition of ATP synthesis, blocking the movement of secretory granules and other organelles that are present in worm muscle cells. As a result, the worms die.
High efficiency is achieved in relation to nematodes and cestodes.
It is recommended to take the drug with food, especially fat, which helps to increase absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. A small portion is converted to albendazole sulfoxide, which is the primary metabolite. He also has anthelmintic activity. The drug is almost completely spread throughout the body. It enters the urine, liver, bile, cerebrospinal fluid. The primary metabolite is converted to albendazole sulfone, as well as other oxidation products.
The highest level of blood concentration is observed approximately 2–5 hours after administration. Albendazole is excreted mainly with bile as the primary metabolite. A small amount excreted in the urine is noted.
Albendazole indications for use
Albendazole is used to treat the following diseases:
- enterobiasis (pinworm damage);
- trichocephalosis (whipworm infection);
- neurocysticercosis (infection of the CNS by the pig chain);
- mixed helminthiasis.
The number and duration of treatment depends on the type of helminthiasis, the degree of invasion, age and body weight.
The daily dose for a person is set based on his weight.
Neurocysticercosis and echinococcosis
With neurocysticercosis and echinococcosis, patients with a body weight not exceeding 60 kg use 15 mg of the drug per 1 kg of weight. Enough two receptions per day. Patients with a body weight greater than 60 kg, take 400 mg twice a day. Therapeutic course of echinococcosis – 3 cycles of 28 days each. Between them, one should maintain a gap of two weeks. Therapy of neurocysticercosis is carried out from 8 to 30 days.
Ascariasis, trichocephalosis, enterobiosis and ankilostomidoz
In ascariasis, trichocephalosis, enterobiasis and hookworm, patients weighing more than 20 kg take 400 mg of the drug once. If necessary, the reception is repeated after 2−3 weeks. For children weighing up to 20 kg, 200 mg is enough.
In filariasis, Albendazole is used 400 mg twice a day. Patients take the drug in this dosage for 10 days.
When enterocolitis use 400 mg of the drug once. In case of toxocarosis, the drug is used in a dosage of 400 mg 2 times a day. The therapeutic course is 5 days.
Some doctors consider it optimal to administer toxocariasis therapy for a 20-day period.
With strongyloidiasis, 400 mg of the drug is applied twice a day for a week. When trichinosis is used the same dosage, only the course of therapy ranges from 8 to 14 days. For the treatment of trichocephalosis, 400 mg is prescribed 1 time per day for 3 days.
With lesions of the hepatic flukes patients take 10 mg of the drug per 1 kg of weight 1 time per day. The course of treatment is 7 days.
To get rid of cysticercosis, adults use 400 mg of the drug twice a day. Children are recommended to take 15 mg of the drug per 1 kg of body weight twice a day. Therapeutic course is 8-30 days.
For echinococcosis, 400 mg of the drug is used twice a day. The recommended course of therapy is from 1 month to six months.
With giardiasis, 200 mg of the drug is prescribed 2 times a day. Children are recommended to take 10–15 mg of the drug per 1 kg of weight. The course of treatment is 1 week.
With strongyloidiasis, 400 mg of Albendazole is used 2 times a day. Reception is conducted throughout the week. Therapy of microsporidosis is to use 15 mg of the drug per 1 kg of weight for children (2 times a day) or 400 mg for adults (twice a day).
It is not recommended to exceed the maximum allowable dosage of 800 mg per day.
