What is Albendazole?

Albendazole (lat. Albendazole) – a drug used against worms. It is used for giardiasis, trichocephalosis, filariasis, ascariasis and other diseases that occur with the defeat of parasites. Albendazole was developed in 1975 and is on the World Health Organization’s main drug list. The medicine is intended for ingestion.

Operating principle

Albendazole causes degenerative changes in the intestinal cells of the worm. When tubulin polymerization is suppressed, cellular cytoplasmic microtubules of the parasite’s intestinal tract are destroyed. The action of the agent is based on changes in biochemical processes: there is a slowdown in glucose utilization and inhibition of ATP synthesis, blocking the movement of secretory granules and other organelles that are present in worm muscle cells. As a result, the worms die.

High efficiency is achieved in relation to nematodes and cestodes.

It is recommended to take the drug with food, especially fat, which helps to increase absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. A small portion is converted to albendazole sulfoxide, which is the primary metabolite. He also has anthelmintic activity. The drug is almost completely spread throughout the body. It enters the urine, liver, bile, cerebrospinal fluid. The primary metabolite is converted to albendazole sulfone, as well as other oxidation products.

The highest level of blood concentration is observed approximately 2–5 hours after administration. Albendazole is excreted mainly with bile as the primary metabolite. A small amount excreted in the urine is noted.
