What is Prednisone?

Corticosteroids are of two types: glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Prednisone is a glucocorticoid. Glucocorticoids have a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effect and mimic cortisol, which is a natural substance released by our adrenal glands in response to inflammation and stress. Prednisone controls inflammation by suppressing our immune system and four times more powerful than cortisol while reducing inflammation.

However, prolonged use can cause immunosuppression, muscle wasting, bone changes, fluid changes, and personality changes. For these reasons, prednisone is usually prescribed only for the short term.

Dosage

Dosing with prednisone can be difficult and often starts with a higher dose, which gradually decreases over days and weeks. There is a fine line between too much or too little prednisone. Always read the label or talk with your pharmacist about the schedule recommended by your doctor. Never prescribe yourself a dosage yourself or based on dosages of other people.

  • Never take more prednisone than recommended by your doctor.
  • Never stop taking prednisone suddenly if you take it for a long period of time.
  • Never start a new course of prednisone yourself without first discussing it with your doctor.

Always follow all instructions.

Usage tips

Prednisone is not friendly with the stomach

Prednisone can irritate the lining of your stomach and should always be taken with food. If your stomach still hurts after taking prednisone with food, try taking antacid (drugs that neutralize the increased acidity of the stomach). If discomfort persists or worsens, consult a doctor.

You are more likely to get stomach ulcers if you take prednisone in combination with anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin. If you are prescribed these medicines, ask your doctor about protective measures that may reduce this risk.

Prednisone is best taken in the morning.

With the constant use of prednisone, the adrenal glands are suppressed and they stop producing cortisol. If you are taking prednisone daily, experts recommend taking the dose in the morning to reduce this risk. Taking prednisone late at night can cause insomnia. Make sure you also take your dose of prednisone with food, and for your information, grapefruit juice does not affect prednisone.

Prednisone has a long duration and is usually administered once a day. Sometimes it is prescribed to take twice a day for a short period of time, with a transition to a single dose.

Increased hunger

Prednisone makes you hungry, and weight gain is a common side effect. Fat deposits can occur around your belly, face, or back of your neck. There may also be fluid retention in the body, which can manifest itself in the form of swelling of the legs and a sudden increase in weight when measured on scales.

The higher the dose and the longer the treatment, the greater the likelihood that you will gain weight. You can control fluid retention by consuming a low-sodium diet and consuming more foods containing potassium, such as bananas, apricots, and dates. A diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates can make you feel satiated for a longer time and, thus, you will not overeat.

Difference between Prednisone and Prednisolone

Both substances prednisone and prednisolone are artificial glucocorticoids. They are used to treat such conditions and, as a rule, are considered equally effective. However, in people with liver disease, prednisone is preferred. This is due to the fact that prednisone needs to be converted by liver enzymes into prednisone before it can work.

Prednisone is usually much cheaper than prednisolone.
