Indications for use

The drug is intended for local and systemic use in patients with such diseases:

  • infectious diseases of the skin and mucous membranes caused by the herpes virus type I and II, including for the treatment of primary genital herpes and its recurrence;
  • infectious diseases caused by varicella-zoster virus and herpes zoster;
  • Herpes infection I and II type in newborns;
  • the drug is also used for the prevention of infectious diseases caused by the herpes simplex virus in immunocompromised patients;
  • for the prevention of cytomegalovirus infection during bone marrow transplantation operations.

How to use?

The tablets are taken regardless of the meal, it is recommended to drink the drug with plenty of water.
For the treatment of infectious diseases caused by the herpes simplex virus, the drug is used in a dose of 200 mg 5 times a day (the drug is taken with an interval of 4 hours, excluding the time of night sleep). The course of treatment is usually 5 days. In patients with impaired intestinal absorption or severe immunodeficiency, the dose of the drug is increased by 2 times.
Patients with a normal immune status to prevent the recurrence of infectious diseases caused by the herpes simplex virus take 200 mg of the drug every 6 hours. It is also possible to receive the drug according to the 400 mg scheme every 12 hours. Zovirax is interrupted periodically for 6-12 months.

Immunodeficiency patients are prescribed Zovirax at a dose of 200 mg every 6 hours to prevent infectious diseases caused by the herpes simplex virus. In case of violation of intestinal absorption or pronounced immunodeficiency, the dose is increased to 400 mg 5 times a day. The prophylactic course of the drug should be continued as long as there is a chance of infection.
Patients with chickenpox or herpes zoster are usually prescribed 800 mg 5 times a day. The duration of therapy with Zovirax is usually 7 days.

After the operation on bone marrow transplantation for the prevention of infectious diseases caused by viruses susceptible to the action of the drug, the appointment of a course of acyclovir in the form of intravenous infusions is recommended. After the end of the course of injections, if necessary, continue therapy with the drug in the form of tablets. The dose of the drug and the course of treatment for these patients are determined by the attending physician individually.
For the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases caused by herpes simplex, in children with immunodeficiency over 2 years old, the drug is used in the same doses as for adults. For the treatment of children under 2 years old, reduce the dose by half.

For the treatment of herpes zoster and chickenpox in children over 6 years of age, a single dose of the drug is 800 mg, for children aged 2 to 6 years, a single dose of the drug is 400 mg, for children under 2 years of age, a single dose of the drug is 200 mg. The drug is taken in recommended doses 4 times a day for 5 days.
In patients suffering from chronic renal insufficiency, it is necessary to adjust the dose, taking into account creatinine clearance.

Side effects

When using the drug in dosage forms that have a systemic effect, the patients had the following side effects:

On the part of the gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting, hyperbilirubinemia, increased activity of liver enzymes, impaired stool, epigastric pain.

From the side of the central nervous system: headache, dizziness, disorientation of orientation in space, confusion, hallucinations, fatigue, disturbed sleep and wakefulness. If you exceed the recommended doses of the drug may develop seizures and coma.
